Set III

Duetscall, and response

Improvising alone is a high wire. Improvising with another improviser is a conversation where neither of you knows the next line.

Chick Corea

the playmate · 8 videos · 2 h 47 min

“Chick noodled a couple of disjointed random notes on the piano … and off we went … never looking back.”

Bobby, remembering their first night as a duo. He called Corea his “true playmate.”7 They recorded Mozart together, and their “Armando’s Rhumba” was a GRAMMY nominee.7,12 Track 2 is the whole 67-minute North Sea Jazz set from 2001.

Jacob Collier

two San Francisco meetings · 3 videos · 8 min

Not a duo act: two public meetings, in October 2025 and October 2026. Jacob calls Bobby “my hero” in his own video of Bobby conducting at his open soundcheck (that one is in Set IV).23 The two clips of them singing together are fan uploads, the only versions I could find. Track 3 is my own 17 seconds of Jacob at soundcheck before his performance at the Johns Hopkins Club. Bobby isn’t in it; Jacob is one of my heroes too.

Others

5 videos · 31 min

Esperanza Spalding at the GRAMMYs, Joey Blake, Thomas Quasthoff, Nigel Kennedy on “All Blues,” Ferenc Snétberger on guitar.

On record, not on video here

  • Yo-Yo Ma. Hush (1992), Vivaldi and Rachmaninoff for voice and cello.7,8
  • Herbie Hancock. Bobby is on Hancock’s Round Midnight (1986).8
  • The Manhattan Transfer. “Another Night in Tunisia,” on Vocalese (1985).8
  • Jon Hendricks. Bobby toured with him in 1980.13

Pat Metheny, and a recording I can’t find

Asked in 2006 about a McFerrin–Metheny project, Pat wrote that “a couple of summers ago” Bobby sat in with his trio, with Christian McBride and Antonio Sanchez, and “did a version of ‘better days ahead’ that was just fantastic.”22 I’ve never found a tape. I wish one existed. My Pat Metheny fan archive: patmethenymusic.com.
